2022. 03. 31.
Toray Industries Hungary Kft.’s new plant in Nyergesújfalu has been inaugurated that marks the first phase of an EUR 408 million investment with the purpose of manufacturing battery separator film (BSF) used for lithium-ion batteries. The project that is set to employ 188 primarily highly skilled workers further strengthens Hungary’s position in the field of EV production capacities.
Established in 1926, the Japanese Toray Industries is present in 29 countries globally with 283 subsidiaries and related companies. Part of the corporate group is Zoltek, a plant of which produces carbon fiber also in Nyergesújfalu.
Toray Industries Hungary’s BSF used for lithium-ion batteries and Zoltek’s carbon fiber combined are expected to rev up the Group’s ‘Green Innovation’ business by providing materials that are key to a carbon-neutral society in Europe. Toray’s investment will result in an increase of 20% of the Group’s global manufacturing capacity.
Toray also intends to take cooperation with LG Chem (LGC) to the next level with the purpose of combining Toray’s film production technology and LGC’s coating technology.
The investment in Nyergesújfalu adds to Hungary’s strong position in the EV market as it is currently the largest battery cell producer in Europe and, with manufacturing capacity to hit 150 GWh till 2025, it is set to remain among the frontrunners.
