Many people don’t know the birthplace of digital pathology is Budapest, and a thriving local ecosystem has now paved the way for a new Pathology Innovation Incubator that is meant to take AI-driven cancer diagnostics to the next level. We asked the CEOs of the two global leaders that teamed up for the effort, Mr. Steven Lynum of Epredia and Dr. Béla Molnár of 3DHistech, to talk about the potential this endeavor holds, the role the Hungarian operation can play in the process, and most of all, whether cancer could become a chronic disease that can be managed like diabetes.

The number of new cancer cases is projected to go up from 19 million to 29 million in 2040. As the numbers grow, testing is becoming more and more complex, so the pathologists involved in this are becoming more and more busy. Their number is decreasing, though – so we need more solutions and new technology, our guests point out.

Semmelweis University is the fourth oldest pathology institute in the world, and it was training the Eastern Bloc 50-60 years ago. Now, the tradition is carried on as the newly set-up incubator seeks to lead the way in cancer diagnostics in the future.

Listen to the full show now, and find out what else Mr. Lynum and Dr. Molnár had to share on:

  • the chances that waiting times in Hungary could be cut because these efforts take place here
  • what challenges scientists face when using AI to support cancer diagnostics
  • staying competitive with emerging companies
  • what might be possible if infinite funds were available for cancer research
