The construction of the first Center for University-Industry Cooperation (FIEK) of Hungary has been completed in Győr. The new complex implemented with the cooperation of Audi Hungaria, Széchenyi István University (SZE) and the Municipality of Győr will be transferred into the possession of the teachers and students in order to work on joint research and development projects of the university and industry.

The FIEK concept is not merely an infrastructural development, but a system supporting long-term sustainable economic growth and development, on the basis of the real and genuine needs of the economy. It is planned that in the eight FIEK centers to be implemented (Budapest, Gödöllő, Kaposvár, Kecskemét, Miskolc, Debrecen, Szeged and Győr) engineers will be trained for the automotive industry with state-of-the art knowledge attaining the standards of the front-ranks of the continent and by implementing further R&D capacities, Hungary can become a hub for automotive development. What is more, thanks to the research and cooperation projects, the competitiveness of the small and medium-sized enterprises intending to appear on the international market can also be increased.

The center with a surface of 4700 square meters and consisting of three buildings will host the joint works of the University of Győr and the industry, research in the field of logistics, research associated with traditional and electric engines, and with turbochargers, and the developments of small and medium-sized enterprises of the region required for international presence will also be hosted here.

The aim is to create an open cooperation platform based on the cooperation between Széchenyi István University and Audi Hungaria in order to implement sustainable development of the technical and technological standards and innovation culture of the automotive industry of Western Transdanubia that can be achieved by the active participation and services provided by that open platform – primarily through professional support and services provided for the small and medium-sized enterprises, while the University will become competitive even in the European higher education space.

A marked evidence of the success of the cooperation is – besides joint university departments – that more than half of some 2,000 engineers currently working for Audi in Győr are alumni of the Széchenyi István University.
